This page includes 60 thumbnails of the hand drawn scores of Kurt Schwitters' Ursonate, made by Jack Ox, from which the 800 sq. foot painting was created. The original scores are at the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, where they are available for the use of scholars. Parts of these scores were seen in the 2004 exhibition of Jack Ox's complete Ursonate painting, which was shown in conjunction with Poland's first Kurt Schwitters' exhibition. Both exhibitions were made possible by the extremely generous contributions of the Auswärtiges Amt Deutchland and IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungene e.V.).

Please read each rectangular score from top left to right and bottom left to right before going onto the next. Click on any to see the page in a large version. The colored strips are the silences in Kurt Schwitters' own recorded performance published on WERGO in Mainz, Germany in 1993.

The first movement of the painting installed at the Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans in 2004, and also the fourth movement.

Please go to the hand made music and phonetic scores to see the only existing score of Kurt Schwitters' own performance of the Ursonate. This score was made by Kai Schoenburg, who by ear wrote down each pitch sung/spoken by Kurt Schwitters, along with the time value of each. Jack Ox, with the help of Angela Fuster-Duran, made the phonetic analysis seen on these pages. The process is also available to read.
